Karlheinz Weinberger

Weinberger started photographing a small group of Swiss teenagers in 1958. Theirs was a gang identity that was literally banged together with nuts and bolts. His subjects imported iconic American culture, chewed it up and spat it back out. Horse shoes, dildos, blue jeans, twisted Hollywood glamour, chains, plates, leather, hairspray and studs styled by the non-conformist.
As photographer and document-er of a subcultural movement, Karlheinz recorded these self labeled rebels both in the studio and on their own stomping ground, with one eventually becoming the other under the constructed eye. These images are some of my favourite and always inspiring.
